Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis – the numbers

Psoriasis - around 1 in 50 people, about 1.3 million, around 2% of the UK population.

Psoriatic arthritis -  1 in 4 of those with psoriasis, about 325,000 people, around 0.5% of the UK population

Nail changes - nearly half (40%-50%) with psoriasis.

Nail changes, (in psoriatic arthritis) are present in nearly 9 people in 10, (80% to 90%) this falls to 4 out of 10 (40%) of those with psoriasis alone. 

Mild psoriasis around 1 million people in the UK, 4 out of 5 (80%).

Moderate psoriasis - around 200,000, about 3 out of 20 of those affected  (15%).

Severe psoriasis - about 65,000 people, 1 out of 20 (5%)

Plaque psoriasis - 9 out of 10 most common type of psoriasis.

Scalp psoriasis 1 out of 2 (50%) of people with psoriasis

One parent - 3 out of 20 (15%) chance that a child will develop the condition.

Both parents - 15 out of 20 (75%)

12,000 children in the UK are affected by arthritis

Neither parents - 1 out of 5 (20%) chance that a brother or sister will also get psoriasis.

Erythrodermic psoriasis - 200 to 300 new cases in the UK each year.
